Diocese of Brooklyn

Office of Diocesan Liturgy

Enhancing Worship

Overview

The Liturgy Office of the Diocese of Brooklyn stands as a pivotal resource, committed to nurturing and fostering the richness of liturgical life within the Diocese. By providing guidance, clarification, and steadfast fidelity to Liturgical Norms, the Office ensures that liturgical and para-liturgical celebrations across parishes and Diocesan Agencies embody best practice and reverence.

Under the direction of Bishop Robert Brennan, the Chief Liturgist of the Diocese, the Liturgy Office coordinates all aspects of major Diocesan events, ensuring that each celebration reflects the spiritual beauty and doctrinal integrity of the Church’s worship. In addition, the Office works closely with various commissions, including the Liturgical Commission, the Art and Architecture Commission, and the Music Commission, to enrich and elevate the liturgical experience.

Education and formation are at the core of the Office’s mission. It sponsors Diocesan Liturgical Minister Training Workshops and Formation Days for a wide range of ministers, including Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC), Lectors, and Ushers. Recognizing the diverse community it serves, the Office offers bilingual training in English and Spanish, with plans to expand to Creole, ensuring that all ministers are well-prepared and knowledgeable in their roles.

Continuing Education and enrichment opportunities are available for present ministers, with instruction tailored to specific needs at the parish or deanery level. The Office also offers days of recollection twice a year, providing spiritual nourishment and reflection for liturgical ministers in both English and Spanish languages. Moreover, the Office is equipped to provide speakers for Days of Recollection/formation at the parish level, catering to the unique needs of each community.

The Liturgy Office also plays a crucial role in the liturgical formation and ongoing education of Priests, Deacons, Religious, Catholic School Teachers, and Catechists in Faith Formation, offering resources and training in English, Spanish, and Creole. By doing so, it ensures that all those involved in liturgical roles are well-versed and updated in the ever-evolving understanding and practice of liturgy.

For those seeking guidance, training, or resources related to liturgical matters, the Liturgy Office welcomes correspondence and collaboration. Respecting the need for open and constructive communication, the Office requests that all inquiries include the writer’s name and address. By fostering an environment of learning, reverence, and beauty, the Liturgy Office continues to enhance the worship life of the Diocese, inviting all to a deeper and more profound experience of God’s presence in the liturgy.
